Medical Services – STI / STD Testing
STI/STD Testing and Treatment
Sexually transmitted infections (STI’s) and sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s) are passed from one person to another during sexual contact whether oral, genital, or anal.
Most often these infections do not cause symptoms so it is hard to know if you have been infected. People are familiar with the term sexually transmitted disease (STD) but because STI’s commonly don’t cause symptoms they are not considered diseases. It is very important to get tested and receive the treatment you need if you have had sex with a new partner, or more than one partner.
We are here to help. The staff at Alight can talk with you about STI / STDs and provide you with testing and/or treatment.
If you find yourself facing an unplanned pregnancy, whether you plan to parent, terminate your pregnancy, or make an adoption plan, it is critical to know whether or not you have an STI / STD.
- Having an abortion when you have an untreated STI / STD, such as Chlamydia or Gonorrhea, significantly increases your risk for developing Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID).
- PID may increase your risk of future ectopic (tubal) pregnancies and can decrease your ability to get pregnant in the future.
Having an untreated STI / STD during your pregnancy can cause complications for both mother and baby:
- Early onset labor
- Premature rupture of membranes
- Uterine infection after delivery
- Low birth weight
- Eye infections
- Chronic liver disease
- Brain damage
Many women with an STI / STD have NO SYMPTOMS. The only way to know for certain is to get tested.
